Anthony Karefa Rogers-Wright is a proud son of Sierra Leone and his mother Dr. Mary-Ann Rogers-Wright. While growing up in Harlem, New York City, Anthony became interested in issues of environmental racism and injustices due to many of his friends developing asthma and other respiratory ailments due to being exposed to toxic air emissions and other airborne pollutants. He became politically active at age 12 when he worked on his first political campaign for then Mayoral candidate David Dinkins.
Anthony continued to build on his desire to liberate all people subjected to environmental injustices by completing his undergraduate and Master's degrees in community development, environmental science, and public policy in Massachusetts. Following stints as an urban/environmental planner in San Diego and Los Angeles, Anthony returned to the east coast.
A renowned national and international climate/racial justice advocate, Anthony has served as a policy advisor and advocate for Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Jay Inslee, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Dr. Cornel West, and Dr. Jill Stein and continues to coordinate with numerous lawmakers at the federal, State, and local level to advance climate and environmental justice as a function of addressing and dismantling all interlinked social injustice that disproportionately and adversely impact marginalized and racialized peoples. In 2014, he assisted with making Colorado Health Insurance Cooperative the first in the state’s history to remove transgender health exclusions in their policies.
Known for his fiery rhetoric and unapologetic passion for mutual justice for all and liberating marginalized peoples from the disproportionate and adverse impacts of a hyper capitalist system of oppression dividing and endangering poor and working class people, Anthony is ready to show why we can no longer go with the flow and why we must return to the traditional Indigenous wisdom of Omaha by going Against the Current Together.
Anthony lives in the 2nd District of Omaha with his mischievous and vocal cat, Ernesto.
