Our police force must be held to account like everyone else. We must reinstate the Public Safety Auditor and establish a genuine and independent Resident Review Board to increase public confidence in the internal investigations by creating an independent review and audit process for all citizen complaints against any sworn police officer.
Individuals convicted of domestic assault/abuse or any crime unbecoming of sworn duties in a previous police department will not have the confidence and trust of the people. Therefore, we must prevent these individuals from becoming an Omaha Police officer.
Ensure our City budget adheres to the National Fire Protection Association Standard 1710, for firefighters and EMS personnel, that calls for a minimum of four staffed firefighters for each engine or aerial ladder.
Crime is down in Omaha. We must now reassess our priorities with a budget that reduces police spending and reinvests these funds into actual crime prevention initiatives, an adequately funded Planning Department, Parks and Recreation Department, Fire/EMS department, and one that increases the number of Mental Health Co-Responders to a minimum of three per shift for each City Council District.
Omaha must be a city that is welcoming and in service to all. Our city government/employees, including, but not limited to, Police, Fire Department/EMS officials must reflect this ethos by taking part in trainings to increase equity and cultural competency such that marginalized and racialized populations (including, but not limited to, BIPOC, LGBTQIIA+, Veterans, and the Disabled) enjoy the highest level of city services.
Increase then influence and collective power of the City’s Native American Advisory Committee.
I cherish the 2nd amendment as a gun owner myself. However, gun ownership must include responsibility and accountability. Domestic abusers should not be in possession of deadly weapons. We must prohibit them from owning guns/firearms and immediately seize their weapons until such time a judge and community liaison deem they are fit to be responsible gun/firearms owners.
Just as Senator Chambers led the State in divesting from Apartheid South Africa, we should investigate and divest City finances and public employee pensions from any nation found to be committing human rights violations including, but not limited to, illegal occupation and war crimes.
